Mrs. Castles Fifth Grade
What a great beginning we have had. I am really enjoying getting to know your children. Below is what is happening in our classroom.
MATH
We have been working on statistical investigations using raisins. Students have posed a question, collected the data, analyzed the data, and interpreted the results. We are now beginning to work on problem solving strategies and exploring patterns using our calculators. This will lead us into some algebra. Then we are on to Unit 1 in Everyday Math.
What are the four steps in the process of statistical investigation?
READING
We have begun to READ ACROSS AMERICA. Each student’s goal is to travel to San Francisco, California by the end of the year. For each book they read they may travel 100 miles. We began our first literature unit focusing on the theme of survival. Students are reading Island of the Blue Dolphins, Hatchet, or My Side of the Mountain, or Brian’s Winter. Reading projects are due on or before Wednesday, September 10.
What are some creative ideas you can think of for a shelter in order to survive?
LANGUAGE
We have been working on our journal journey. Can’t wait to see where they will be going. Thank you for mailing them.
What are the 6 traits of writing?
SPELLING
In spelling students are responsible for the most frequent used words used (No excuse words)
Science
We are studying the body systems beginning with the skeletal system. We are dissecting owl pellets.
What did you find in your owl pellet?
What is an owl pellet?
Social Studies
Soon to come.
